Home CDL Info How to Get Trucking Jobs Types of Trucking Jobs LTL (Less than Load) Trucking Jobs Jobs In Trucking Thursday, November 10. 2011 LTL (Less than Load) Trucking Jobs If a driver is interested in the transportation of relatively small freight, he should apply for one of the different LTL truck driving jobs. These are jobs in which you will be transporting small packages of between 100 and 200 pounds each. Your responsibility is to collect those items from different locations or shipping companies and have everything consolidated onto trailers for linehaul to a hub terminal or delivering terminal where the freight is going to be further consolidated and sorted for additional linehauls.

LTL truck driving jobs are not too difficult to handle. In most cases, a driver will start the day by loading up and heading out for deliveries. After that, he will start again by making pickups after the trailer has been emptied. Most pickups are handled in the afternoon while the deliveries take place in the morning. The job is also very simple because the routes are predetermined for the day all many weeks, thus giving the driver an opportunity to develop a good relationship with other people with whom you work.

To qualify for LTL trucking jobs, a driver must meet several conditions:

He needs to have a commercial driver's license (CDL). This is a requirement of the law for handling such trucks needed to carry out the driver’s duties. To get the license, a driver must sit for a written exam and pass a driving test which will be carried out at the premises of the transport department.
A driver must also be of a sound mind and be able to read and write English because he will always be having contact with other people in signing documents and preparing reports for his employer.

One of the reasons why LTL trucking jobs are so popular is the great starting salary. The industry rate is about $17.61 per hour. With any of these jobs, the annual salary will certainly exceed $65,000 every year. That amount is excluding other bonuses, such as vacation and medical benefits which are available for a driver and his family. If a driver wants to earn more with a less than truckload job, it is important to choose the routes with many miles. This is because many companies will pay based on the miles covered.

As the drivers of less-than-truckload jobs are highly paid, drivers hunting for these jobs will always come across stiff competition. Many new drivers sometimes take up whatever route is assigned to them until they reach some senior levels where they can have some "powers" to determine how they want to work. At the same time, it is necessary to make sure that a driver is highly qualified for the job. This gives him an opportunity to have a lot of options that will increase his financial benefits and make the driver enjoy his job and lifestyle.
