How To Qualify For Truck Driving Jobs

How To Qualify For Truck Driving Jobs - Jobs In Trucking #serendipity_banner { background-image: url(/uploads/bgHeader.jpg); background-position: left top; background-repeat: no-repeat; } Skip to blog entries Skip to archive page Skip to left sidebar Skip to right sidebar
Home CDL Info How to Get Trucking Jobs Types of Trucking Jobs How To Qualify For Truck Driving Jobs Jobs In Trucking Thursday, November 10. 2011 How To Qualify For Truck Driving Jobs Truck driving jobs require rigorous labor, but the rewards are definitely worth the effort. Trucking jobs offer drivers great pay, wonderful benefits, the opportunity to see their family typically on a nightly basis, an opportunity to see the entire country, and incredible job security. Truck drivers begin their careers earning approximately $40,000-45,000 and this number will rapidly increase as the driver sticks with a company for a couple of years and develops a reputation for being a safe, dependable truck driver. A safe truck driver will never have to worry about finding a job, as trucking companies hire recruiters who are constantly focused on finding new drivers. As long as our national economy is functioning, truck drivers will always be high demand.

Many people are confused about how to qualify for truck driving jobs. To become a licensed truck driver, a driver must consider these requirements:

The driver must be at least 21 years old. This is to show that he are matured enough to handle such large vehicles and interact with the police and the public.
He must also be in good physical condition. It is expected of a driver to have good hearing, a 70-degree field of vision in each eye, and at least 20/40 vision with corrective lenses or glasses. A truck driver also cannot be colorblind.
A prospective driver must also pass the CDL exam which consists of a written test on the rules and regulations and a demonstration that the driver can safely operate a commercial truck.
A driver must also have a good driving record to qualify. A excessive amount of traffic violations will prevent a company from taking a risk in hiring a driver.
He must also not have a history of conviction of felony related to the use of a motor vehicle. This generally includes crime related to possession of drugs or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The driver must also not have been involved in a hit-and-run accident which led to death or injury.
A driver must also be able to speak and read English. This skill is imperative to prepare reports, read road signs, and communicate with the public and the police.
Due to the nature of the job, a driver must be able to lift heavy objects. Though the duty of a truck driver does not directly involve lifting heavy objects, there are often times cases where the driver might be involved in such activities. This could especially become important when he finds himself under unexpected circumstances on the highway.

The most effective method of passing the CDL exam is to attend a reputable driving school. These driving schools are scattered all throughout the country and can be either government run or privately run. One good thing about truck driving schools is that a driver will be taught the necessary things that are generally learned only through personal experience on the road. In some cases, a trucking company may even sponsor a driver to get him through driving school, but this usually requires that the driver work for the company for a set number of months. This could be a great opportunity for new drivers as it is extraordinarily difficult to get a truck driving job without an available work history.

Dry Van (Dry Box) Trucking Jobs

Dry Van (Dry Box) Trucking Jobs - Jobs In Trucking #serendipity_banner { background-image: url(/uploads/bgHeader.jpg); background-position: left top; background-repeat: no-repeat; } Skip to blog entries Skip to archive page Skip to left sidebar Skip to right sidebar
Home CDL Info How to Get Trucking Jobs Types of Trucking Jobs Dry Van (Dry Box) Trucking Jobs Jobs In Trucking Thursday, November 10. 2011 Dry Van (Dry Box) Trucking Jobs When a driver is determining which trucking jobs will provide the best fit for him, dry van is generally the first option acknowledged. A dry van is the standard trailer which can carry freight packed in boxes or loaded on pallets as long as the goods do not need to be temperature-controlled. This is the standard form of transportation for cargo which does not have temperature requirements and can fit into any standard truck trailer.

In most cases, the dry van trailer has a translucent or aluminum roof. The translucent roof has fiber glass layers with 0.075 inches in thickness while the aluminum has 0.040 inches of thickness. Both materials provide more than sufficient protection for any load. The advantage of a translucent roof is that it allows the interior to be illuminated by natural light. This will allow a driver to see inside of his closed trailer, but the only problem with a translucent roof is that it creates a greenhouse effect, drastically increasing the temperature inside the trailer. Luckily, advancement in transportation technology has brought about different types of materials to ensure that the truck driver is comfortable while driving.

If a CDL driver interested in applying for dry van jobs, he or she will need to be aware of these important things:

The cargo may not meet the required safety level if the dry van has a leaf spring suspension. This could cause instability in the suspension and potentially damage more delicate items. This problem will always need to be considered when transporting extremely fragile items such as electronics, chemistry equipment, and printing presses.
A driver is much more likely to get hired if he or she has a clean DAC driver history. A trucking company will always look up a driver’s work history before he is hired to see if he has had any accidents in the past or if he has been fired from a previous company.
A driver should ensure he or she has a current commercial driver's license (CDL). Every potential driver must pass the CDL exam for the specific form of driving that he or she would like to perform. One common mistake that people make is failing to renew their license after the expiration date, and when the opportunity for a new employment comes, they will find themselves unqualified.
A driver should not usually stop after achieving the minimum requirements. In addition to passing the CDL exam, a driver should get some other endorsements that make him qualified to handle some other special vans. The driver will be rewarded by receiving the opportunity to drive trailers that drivers with just a CDL are not capable. These jobs are specialized and generally offer much higher pay.
5.It is also advised that a driver consult his insurance company to get the necessary information about his personal driving history. This may provide the driver with additional information not found in the MVR or DAC history report. This knowledge will enable the driver to present his application in a proper way, and when he is called for any interview, he will be able to satisfactorily answer all the questions asked.

Dry van jobs can really change a driver’s life if he takes advantage of the information on vacancies made available through the Internet. Proper use of this information could result in a driver being competed over by numerous transportation companies. Truck driving is one of the oldest, most respectable jobs America has to offer, and if you are looking for a trucking job, dry van jobs are the most widely available.
