Denver school board approves buying new building for Emily Griffith
The Denver Postdenverpost.comPosted: 12/20/2012 07:16:42 PM MSTDecember 21, 2012 3:36 AM GMTUpdated: 12/20/2012 08:36:43 PM MST
Purchase of a 13-story building downtown got a green light Thursday from the Denver Public Schools board.
On a vote of 4-to-2, with members Andrea Merida and Jeannie Kaplan voting no and member Arturo Jimenez absent, the board approved a contract to buy the 1860 Lincoln building from a group of owners.
The building will house much of the Emily Griffith Technical College and high school, as well as a new downtown elementary school and relocated administration offices.
The purchase, which will be funded with some of the proceeds from a $466 million bond sale approved by voters last month, is part of a sweeping package of real estate moves planned by DPS.
The district hopes to sell the Emily Griffith building, which sits on a prime downtown spot, at 15th and Welton streets. In addition, DPS has once again put its administration offices, located at Ninth Avenue and Grant Street, on the market. The district tried unsuccessfully to sell that building in 2007.

Northern Petroleum issues French Guiana update
Northern Petroleum (NOP) on Friday stated that it was looking at the "big picture" when it came to French Guiana, as it provided an operational update on its fully-funded four-well drilling programme.
"The four-well exploration programme has been designed to look at the big picture of this licence which covers an enormous area, equivalent to approximately 100 UK North Sea blocks," said managing director Derek Musgrove.
The Zaedyus oil discovery well, GM-ES-1, encountered 72 metres of net oil pay in two turbidite sand systems. The joint venture, led by Royal Dutch Shell (RDSB), decided to extend the exploration activities through committing to and funding a four-well drilling programme and contracted the Stena IceMAX dynamically positioned drillship.
The recently completed GM-ES-2 was the first exploration well in the current programme and the drillship will be moved onto the GM-ES-3 location to drill the second well in the programme.
The GM-ES-3 well will be targeting several Cretaceous-aged reservoir intervals. The objective of the well is to explore for significant oil volumes in the fan, help determine the Cingulata sub-surface model, possibly determine an oil-water contact, assess the reservoir potential in the north-western part of the larger Cingulata fan system and better understand the potential of the entire block.
GM-ES-3 is predicted to take approximately three to four months and operational performance should benefit from the learning experiences of the first two successfully completed wells.
"The programme is intended to provide sufficient understanding of all aspects of the reservoir, oil generation, migration and entrapment to establish and provide the necessary information to unlock the massive potential of this exciting new oil province," added Musgrove. "The focus is on this wider and greater objective rather than individual prospect appraisal, hence the minimum four-well programme."
Northern Petroleum, through a 50% holding in Northpet Investments, owns a 1.25% net interest in the Guyane Maritime offshore exploration licence. Northern is in partnership with Shell (45%), Total (25%), Tullow Oil (TLW) (27.5%), and Wessex Exploration (WSX) (1.25% through the remaining 50% interest in Northpet Investments).

Prez advocates closer integration between Asean, India
He said India has been consistent in its support to the evolution of Asean’s central and leading role in this region and endorsed objectives for an Asean Community by 2015, for a Master Plan on Asean Connectivity, the Initiative for Asean Integration and, most recently, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.
“Our trade has surpassed our expectations. We are now looking at ways and means to enhance cooperation between our Small and Medium Enterprises and entrepreneurial sectors.
“We should take full advantage of our complementarities through more ambitious agreements; we should catalyse the flows of investments and goods and services, and link the synergies of our youth; we should facilitate the joint initiatives of the industrial sectors in our respective countries and we should improve the infrastructural capacity in our region to meet the aspirations and ambitions of our peoples,” he said.
Noting that the Asean-India Dialogue Partnership has reached a significant milestone this year, he said that in two decades of steady development, it has matured into a strategic partnership. “We all have a shared vision of promoting peace and stability and we are united in our dream of a new Asia full of promise and opportunities. There will be challenges but we are confident of our ability to co-operate and address these collectively and successfully in the interest of our peoples,” he said.
He said the essence of Asean and India partnership is that it facilitates and assists each partner country in strengthening its national programmes for sustainable economic and socio-cultural development and in contributing to the growing relevance of Asia globally.
“The Asia-Pacific region is today central to the global dialogue on political, economic and security issues. It is, therefore, natural that Asean and India, with their affinities and complementary capacities, come together for the definition of the new economic and security architecture in the region,” he said.
In the last decade, Mukherjee said, “As our respective capacities have grown, our partnership has become all the more relevant. “We have now succeeded in putting in place the structural framework for a comprehensive intensification of our cooperation; and we have developed several far

Ikea urges govt to open its doors wider
Earlier, the government had struck down most of the products that the company wanted to sell through its stores, giving rise to doubt whether the single brand FDI policy was all about selling of single product.
Positioning itself as a complete home furnishing solutions provider, Ikea stores sell a wide range of products from functional furniture to toys and office stationery.
According to the company’s website, total product range has 10,960 products. Though not all stores showcase the whole product range, there is a core range which remains the same across.
Apart from these products, the stores also house cafes.
But the Indian government has disallowed selling items such as home and office products, textiles, apparel and fabric, electronic items, leather products, toys, books, and lifestyle and travel-related items. The government has also barred setting up Ikea cafes.
There were doubts whether the company would want to set up stores here at all, as these restrictions went against the business model it follows globally.
As reported by Firstpost earlier, the Indian government’s restrictions would in effect fundamentally change the Ikea experience.
The first thing that would hit a visitor to the store is the size. The furniture is arranged in rooms. For example, a kitchen will have dishes and a study will have stationary, all for sale.
With the government disallowing sale of most of these products and most importantly the cafe, a customer will not get the full Ikea experience.
However, now Ikea seems to be putting its foot down. If the company has gone back to the government asking it to review the restrictions, it does mean that it may also rethink its decision to enter India.
If the company still decides to stay back, that is because the opportunity in India’s $18.5 billion households market, which is growing 10-12 percent annually, is lucrative.

Hiring to pick up in 2013 led by retail, banking
The hiring numbers for public sector banks are expected in the range of 50,000 to 70,000 people in 2013, while the private sector banking space could also see a fair amount of such activities if licenses are given to new players.
Retail sector is also expected to see large-scale hirings after the entry of foreign players into this business. When it comes to salary hikes, the average for most of the sectors is expected in single digits as part of cost-saving efforts, even though companies would be doling out 10-15 percent pay increments to good performers, experts say.
At the same time, the companies may not hesitate to lay off non-performers and carry out restructuring exercises to do away with non-performing business units.
Manpower India Managing Director A G Rao said that the companies would not hesitate to pay a salary hike of 10-15 percent to performers, but at the same time some will remain very objective and cost cautious due to the economic scenario.
“We also see a growing trend of organisations using new age tools like work from home, flexi working and performance linked bonus, ESOP’s, Global opportunity etc. as tools of retention / compensation of employees,” Rao said.
The year 2012 has proved to be a mixed bag for the Indian job market as most sectors were slow on their business and employment outlook, but the coming year holds promise driven by the government’s reform push. Hiring took a hit this year largely on the back of global slowdown as well as slower growth rate of Indian economy.
“The year 2012 began with a lot of promise as the job market in India was estimated to grow at 15 percent. But the sharp economic downturn in India and the impact of the European crisis adversely affected hiring across sectors like IT, telecom, hospitality, retail and infrastructure,” Randstad India MD and CEO E Balaji said.
TeamLease Services Senior Vice President and Co-Founder Sangeeta Lala said “2012 has been a stagnant year for most sectors; few sectors like retail, FMCG and real estate has seen some quarterly spike due to projects and specific hiring projects.”
According to various surveys and experts, hiring activity in the country in 2013 is likely to be at a slower pace, but that, India would still fare better than its global peers, who are reeling under economic uncertainty, which in turn is affecting their investments in talent.
Despite the continuing impact of global macro-economic situation and the uncertainty around the economic and political environment, in India, employer hiring intentions remain positive across sectors and geographical regions.
During 2013, sectors like BFSI, manufacturing, power, construction, oil and gas and petrochemicals are expected to be bullish towards hiring. According to Manpower India Executive Director Srikanth Rengarajan, “the first quarter of next year (January-March) looks low on hiring activity trend. However, second quarter onwards activity will definitely pick up and markets will have to come out of the closet.”
Government policies will be required to increase consumption and attract investors, Rengarajan added. Some key hiring trends in 2012 included selective hiring (both in terms of quality and quantity) and more stringent selection procedure

Corporate India steps up security for women after Delhi rape case
While ICICI Bank has conducted several meetings to figure out ways of assuring the safety of their women, female employees at Maruti’s Gurgaon office have come together to share their safety concerns with SY Siddiqui, chief operating officer of HR, among other functions, another ET report said.
Companies like Accenture, HSBC and Aegis either ensure that a male security guard drops women employees if they are travelling alone or drivers are not allowed to deviate from the travel plan and a security guard has a walky-talky which is always switched on and has to maintain regular contacts with the transport department.
After Wipro BPO employee Jyotikumari Choudhary’s gang-rape and murder in November 2007, the company came up with multi-level safety measures to ensure that such incidences are avoided in the future. Wipro runs late night cabs at scheduled times. Routes and every cab is registered with the transport department and each vehicle has a security guard in it who accompanies the lady employee to the doorstep. The company has also introduced a vehicle-tracking system that enables company’s security officials to monitor and track the location of the cabs ferrying employees and has a 24X7 toll-free support number on which employees can report about an emergency.
Yebhi.com also ensures women are not the last to be dropped or the first to be picked up in office taxis, the ET report said.
NDTV, on the other hand, has hourly shuttles to pick up employees from various points during the day. All employees are entitled to pick-up and drop-off during dark hours.
Though the safety of women travelling during night by company-arranged cabs is quite ensured by many firms, centralised scrutiny of all office vehicles by a GPS system, assisted by police patrol at night is needed.
Last year, the Delhi police made it mandatory for employers to deploy security guards in cabs ferrying women during night. But some BPOs and corporates in the national capital were seen trying to bend the official directive in order to cut costs.
But with increasing number of crimes against women in Gurgaon and Haryana, the city police has decided to visit each and every multi-national and BPO company to inspect the current situation and note down the safety issues of women working in these companies.

Reliance Petroleum insider trading case gets murkier
“RIL has been trying to settle the case through consent orders but its proposals have been rejected twice by the regulator, which felt the amount put up by the company was inadequate. In the first consent application, RIL offered to pay a penalty of Rs 3 crore while on the second occasion it offered to pay less than Rs 10 crore as penalty, which was unacceptable to the regulator,” the ET report said.
Consent order is an out-of-court settlement wherein parties agree to a sum of amount as fine by the aggregator, while the regulator drops all charges of wrongdoing.
Reliance Industries, meanwhile, has sought time until January 14 to file a reply in the dispute between market regulator Sebi and the Central Information Commission (CIC) at the Bombay High Court. The case will now be heard on January 23.
In November, the CIC had ordered Sebi to reveal the identities of the the entities that were involved in short selling of Reliance Petroleum shares to a Bangalore-based lawyer who had sought these details under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, along with details of the investigation report and consent order proceedings in this matter. But on 21 November, Sebi moved Bombay High Court against the CIC order saying CIC can’t force the regulator to disclose details of investigations before the final order has been issued.
The High Court on 4 December decided to make RIL a party to the case as it was involved in the settlement process.
While the battle continues, one wonders why Sebi took five years to investigate an insider trading case.
