Shell says Gulf find may hold 100 million barrels

Shell's state-of-the-art Olympus platform is preparing to journey to the deep-water Gulf of Mexico. A drilling hunch with its roots in the Jurassic period is paying off for Royal Dutch Shell, with a potential 100-million barrel oil find adding to the company’s bounty in the Gulf of Mexico.

Shell said Wednesday that its Vicksburg exploratory well encountered an estimated 500 feet of net oil pay. The well is five miles from the company’s Appomattox site, where Shell already has found 500 million barrels of potentially recoverable resources.

“This is a Jurassic-age reservoir that is more than 160 million years old that was deposited as desert dunes and now is sitting beneath the floor of the Gulf of Mexico,” said Mark Shuster, executive vice president of Shell Upstream Americas Exploration.

He said Shell geologists were brainstorming about 15 years ago and came up with the idea of exploring to see whether they could access the Norphlet Play — a prolific onshore formation — in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

“No one thought we would be able to find oil in this reservoir in the deep water,” Shuster said. “But we made the first forays into this play, and subsequently, other companies are coming along.”

Shell bought licenses in 2002 for the area where it drilled the Vicksburg and Appomattox wells.

It made its first oil discovery at Appomattox in 2009 and now is evaluating strategies for  going forward with development.

The Vicksburg discovery nearby raises the possibility of connecting the wells to make production more economic, Shuster said.

He said that the company probably will produce from multiple wells at Appomattox, regardless of further development on Vicksburg discoveries.

“The reason that Vicksburg is important is that it is another significant discovery and it is adjacent to Appomattox,” Shuster said. “What’s most surprising is that we found a resource base that is in the range of what we had expected, but at the higher end.”

The Vicksburg well is under nearly 7,500 feet of water and was drilled to a total depth of 26,385 feet, making it one of Shell’s deepest wells in the Gulf — with the attendant challenges of high pressures and well temperatures.

But the discoveries have more than proved that the instincts of the geologists 15 years back were right on track.

“The Norphlet Play is a strong pillar of our portfolio,” Shuster said. “We have been out there since the early 2000s, exploring for oil in these deep plays. We are quite happy — we have had the Appomattox success and now this new Vicksburg success.”

Shell is operating the Vicksburg well with a 75 percent interest. Nexen, a wholly owned subsidiary of Chinese national oil company CNOOC Ltd., owns the remaining 25 percent interest.

Energy rigs in U.S. rise to 1,757, Baker Hughes reports

Oil and gas rigs in the U.S. advanced by nine to 1,757, the first gain in three weeks, according to Baker Hughes Inc.

Oil rigs increased by five to 1,395, the Houston-based field services company said on its website Wednesday. Gas rigs were up two to 355, and miscellaneous rigs rose two to seven.

The total count remained unchanged in the second quarter after five straight declines, potentially foreshadowing a rebound in activity and an increase in field-services demand as producers respond to this year’s rise in both oil and natural gas prices. June was the most active month for U.S. land drilling permits in more than a year, according to a Barclays Plc research note.

“With a frustratingly slow expansion of the land rig count to start the year, most investors demonstrated skepticism that demand prospects were improving for service providers throughout most U.S. basins,” James West, an analyst for the Barclays investment-banking unit in New York, said in the note this week. “Permitting activity, which typically leads drilling activity by several months, has been strong. We think gains in the rig count will accelerate.”

Natural gas for August delivery rose 0.5 cent to $3.659 per million British thermal units on the New York Mercantile Exchange, up 26 percent from a year ago.
U.S. gas stockpiles gained 72 billion cubic feet in the week ended June 28 to 2.605 trillion, the Energy Information Administration, the Energy Department’s statistical arm, said Wednesday. Supplies are 16 percent below year-earlier levels.

U.S. oil output climbed 6,000 barrels a day to 7.27 million last week, EIA data show. Production reached 7.37 million barrels a day in the week ended May 3, the most since 1992. Stockpiles dropped for the first time in four weeks, falling 10.3 million barrels to 383.8 million, the EIA said.

Crude for August delivery rose $1.54, or 1.5 percent, to $101.14 a barrel Wednesday on the Nymex, up 15 percent in the past year. Oil rose above $100 a barrel for the first time in nine months as Egypt’s political showdown escalated and supplies declined.

A boom in U.S. gas and oil output, driven largely by hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, helped the nation meet 89 percent of its energy needs in March, the highest monthly rate since April 1986, Energy Information Administration data show.

Trump finds new adversary in wind power

Donald Trump has waged public feuds with beloved comedians and the leader of the free world.

Now the brazen mogul has his narrowed eyes set on a new adversary. And this time, his ire has gone international.

Trump is taking aim at wind energy, in a series of charged tweets and a threat to pull his investment in a planned Scottish hotel that would overlook an offshore wind energy project, according to a report by NPR.

“I will not build this hotel if they are going to build this ridiculous wind farm,” Trump said. “Who would build a hotel where the windows are looking right into an industrial turbine?”

According to NPR, the Scottish government recently approved construction of 11 large offshore turbines, within eyeshot of the Trump International Championship Golf Links course, which opened near Aberdeen, Scotland last year.

Trump is planning a second golf course and a luxury hotel there, as well.

The resort, he tells NPR, “will be truly spectracular and truly beautiful.”

Wind turbines, on the other hand, “are a disaster for the environment,” he says.

Here are some of Trump’s recent rants against wind power:
