Which Drilling Rig Is Hiring?

When you are looking for oil rig jobs, it is reasonable to wonder which drilling rigs are hiring. When times are good, it is enough to take the lazy way out: looking at oil drilling job ads in the newspapers and job boards as well as registering yourself with recruitment agencies. But when the going gets tough, the job seekers who find the vacancies are those who go the extra mile,

So how do you find out which drilling rig is hiring? Frankly, that depends on two important things: who you know and what kind of job you are looking for.

If you already have some experience working on an oil rig, you should already know some people. Go talk to them and let them know what you are looking for. Don’t be shy. Don’t feel embarrassed. If you cannot do something so simple, you do not deserve to get any oil drilling rig jobs. You never really know when one of your ex-colleagues, ex-bosses or acquaintances might be able to help you. Just remember that what goes around comes around. If they try to help you, make sure you pay them back one day.

Once you get that out of the way, it is time to get down to the nuts and bolts of the drilling rig job search. How you find a drilling rig that is hiring depends on whether you want an offshore drilling job, a deep water oil drilling job or a land drilling job. There are differences in how you approach each type of job search.

Searching for roustabout jobs on an oil platform that is located in shallow waters just off the coast is fairly easy and passive. Many of these oil rigs have day-rate vacancies for entry level jobs and often have some designated point and time where they pick up workers. Get there early so that you are at the head of the crowd and you have a good chance of getting picked. How do you find this place (and the pickup time)? Just ask around the docks and your state’s unemployment office (assuming there is offshore drilling in your state).

Searching for land drilling rig jobs is a lot more tedious but not too difficult either. You need your own transportation and a good map of your state. After that it is just a matter of driving around looking for oil fields and talking to the guy in charge of the field or rig. Be persistent. Sometimes the oil patch you visit has no job vacancy for you but the next door oil field may have plenty of work.

Looking for offshore drilling rig jobs in deep water is a lot more complicated. However, it can be worth it because they usually pay the most. If you are fresh out of high school, have no seagoing experience and no hard labor experience, you probably do not have a chance. But if you have ever worked on a trawler as a fisherman, a sailor in the Coast Guard on Navy, or as a laborer in a construction gang, you have a decent chance of getting in as an entry level roustabout even though you do not have directly relevant experience.

One way of finding jobs on these deep water drilling rigs is to hang out around the heliports in your state. Because the rigs are usually far offshore, most drilling rig companies transport their workers to and from their offshore rigs using a helicopter. An important thing to note is that these tours of duty are usually two weeks on and two weeks off, i.e. the workers work two weeks straight without a break and then get the next two weeks off. Like most men in difficult jobs, after they get back to dry land many of them will unwind in the nearest bar. This bar is probably near the heliport or airport, so hang around, listen in on the conversations and figure out who you should talk to.

Are there other ways of finding out which drilling rig is hiring? Sure there are!

Entry Level Rig Jobs

The oil industry pays well. This is why many people want to work there. This is true even for those without a college education. So if you have a strong back but dislike the thought of going to college, working on an oil rig is the job for you. There is no other place where you can earn $40,000 to $50,000 a year doing good honest labor. Even if you want to go to college, it can be a good idea to get an oil rig job. Just one to two years of hard work could pay for your entire 4-year Bachelors degree course without your having to take out an expensive student loan.

You may wonder how to get such a job if you do not have any experience. Fortunately, like any other industry there are jobs for those starting out. You can start at the bottom with entry level rig jobs and work your way up. So how do you find these oil rig jobs which need no experience?

First of all, you need to know that there are generally three types of oil rig jobs in the United States: onshore, offshore and deep water. Onshore means oil rigs on land. While they pay better than many other jobs requiring physical labor, they usually offer the lowest wages out of all the oil rigs. There are three main reasons for this: these onshore oil rigs are usually sited on older and less productive oil fields; the working conditions are not as severe as those on board offshore oil rigs; the working conditions are less dangerous those than offshore oil drilling jobs.

“Offshore oil drilling rig” usually just means any oil rig that is not placed on dry land. It can be a jack-up rig in shallow waters near the coast or it can be a drillship working in deep waters. However, a deep water drilling rig is usually sited in waters over 1000 feet in depth. These oil rigs are sometimes built on large ships and sometimes on something like a giant barge or man-made island. There is no precise definition possible because the technology used to find and drill for oil advances rapidly, sometimes incrementally and sometimes in leaps and bounds. Most offshore oil rigs are a mixture of both old and new technologies.

As you may expect, drilling for oil in deeper waters is much harder and more dangerous than drilling in shallow waters in sight of land. Offshore oil rig jobs in deep waters usually require at least some degree degree of experience and pay much better. The $50,000 and $60,000 a year roustabout job wages you sometimes hear about are usually for these kinds of oil rigs. Work on oil platforms in shallow waters normally pay $5000 to $10,000 less.

One important point you need to be aware of is that quoted salaries for many drilling rig jobs are usually calculated on a daily rate. That’s 12-hours a day 7 days a week with no weekend breaks and inclusive of night shifts. Depending on the company, you might work 7 days, 14 days or 21 days at a stretch before you get time off. Time off also varies from one week to two weeks. A job requiring three weeks on and two weeks off usually pays more than a job requiring two weeks on and two weeks off.

One of the best way to get entry level rig jobs is to start modestly by looking for a roustabout job on a land-based oil rig. You will need to live in a state which has plenty of such oil rigs, e.g. Texas or Virginia. In good times, there will be many jobs advertised in the local newspapers. In tougher times, you may need to visit the oil fields one by one to look for roustabout job vacancies.

Once you have some experience, you can move to one of the Gulf states and look for a oil rig job vacancies. Start with drilling rigs in shallow waters, then move on to deep water rigs when you have more experience. As older oil fields on land and in shallow coastal waters become depleted, future offshore oil jobs will be in deep waters or alternative sources like oil shales and oil sands.

Many job seekers fail to find or get entry level rig jobs because they are impatient, too lazy or simply expect too much. Yes, wages are very high. But you need to work your way up from simpler rigs to more complex platforms and drillships. A job on an older oil field on land may only pay a bit more than a laborer’s job in a construction yard but can be a good way to gain much needed experience for more difficult offshore drilling jobs.

How To Qualify For Truck Driving Jobs

Home CDL Info How to Get Trucking Jobs Types of Trucking Jobs How To Qualify For Truck Driving Jobs Jobs In Trucking Thursday, November 10. 2011 How To Qualify For Truck Driving Jobs Truck driving jobs require rigorous labor, but the rewards are definitely worth the effort. Trucking jobs offer drivers great pay, wonderful benefits, the opportunity to see their family typically on a nightly basis, an opportunity to see the entire country, and incredible job security. Truck drivers begin their careers earning approximately $40,000-45,000 and this number will rapidly increase as the driver sticks with a company for a couple of years and develops a reputation for being a safe, dependable truck driver. A safe truck driver will never have to worry about finding a job, as trucking companies hire recruiters who are constantly focused on finding new drivers. As long as our national economy is functioning, truck drivers will always be high demand.

Many people are confused about how to qualify for truck driving jobs. To become a licensed truck driver, a driver must consider these requirements:

The driver must be at least 21 years old. This is to show that he are matured enough to handle such large vehicles and interact with the police and the public.
He must also be in good physical condition. It is expected of a driver to have good hearing, a 70-degree field of vision in each eye, and at least 20/40 vision with corrective lenses or glasses. A truck driver also cannot be colorblind.
A prospective driver must also pass the CDL exam which consists of a written test on the rules and regulations and a demonstration that the driver can safely operate a commercial truck.
A driver must also have a good driving record to qualify. A excessive amount of traffic violations will prevent a company from taking a risk in hiring a driver.
He must also not have a history of conviction of felony related to the use of a motor vehicle. This generally includes crime related to possession of drugs or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The driver must also not have been involved in a hit-and-run accident which led to death or injury.
A driver must also be able to speak and read English. This skill is imperative to prepare reports, read road signs, and communicate with the public and the police.
Due to the nature of the job, a driver must be able to lift heavy objects. Though the duty of a truck driver does not directly involve lifting heavy objects, there are often times cases where the driver might be involved in such activities. This could especially become important when he finds himself under unexpected circumstances on the highway.

The most effective method of passing the CDL exam is to attend a reputable driving school. These driving schools are scattered all throughout the country and can be either government run or privately run. One good thing about truck driving schools is that a driver will be taught the necessary things that are generally learned only through personal experience on the road. In some cases, a trucking company may even sponsor a driver to get him through driving school, but this usually requires that the driver work for the company for a set number of months. This could be a great opportunity for new drivers as it is extraordinarily difficult to get a truck driving job without an available work history.
