Dalrymple Welcomes State Population Growth
Posted on 12/20/2012
Governor Jack Dalrymple today said he welcomes the latest U.S. Census Bureau estimates that show North Dakota's population is the fastest growing in the nation. North Dakota's population has grown by 14,888 residents in the last year.
"After years of population decline, it's good to see that our economic growth continues to keep North Dakotans home and that we are attracting new residents throughout the state who come for good jobs, a strong economy and our excellent quality of life," Dalrymple said.
The U.S. Census Bureau today released its 2012 national and state population estimates that show North Dakota's population has reached an all-time high of 699,629 residents. Last year, North Dakota's official 2011 population of 683,932 residents exceeded the state's previous record set in 1930.
North Dakota's population has grown during eight of the last nine years. The state's population has increased by 66,820 residents from a decade-low of 632, 809 reported in 2003, the U.S. Census Bureau reports. Due to the state's dynamic residential population change, members of the North Dakota Census Committee said today's estimates may be lower than the state's actual population growth.

CU-Boulder students help create NASA's hit 'Gangnam Style' parody
Just when it seemed like the "Gangnam Style" phenomenon couldn't get any bigger, the dance craze has even made its way to outer space. Well, sort of.
A student co-op group at NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center -- which includes two University of Colorado students -- made and starred in a parody video of Korean pop-star Psy's YouTube dance hit that has found its own viral success.
CU junior Chris Nie, who was part of the student co-op at the Johnson Space Center and is in the clip, said the video took off within minutes of being uploaded Friday. At last check, the video had more than 1.9 million views and was fast approaching 2 million.
"It was nuts," Nie said. "We had like a world-premiere type deal at the Johnson

Berkeley Supply offers American-made goods for guys
It might be surprising in other cities, but in Denver the idea of a menswear store in the middle of a bicycle shop doesn't seem odd.
Which is why it made perfect sense for Eli Cox to create his own little retail patch sandwiched between Avery County Cycles and Pearl Velo at the corner of Tennyson Street and West 43rd Avenue in northwest Denver's lively Berkeley neighborhood.
Berkeley Supply, which opened earlier this month, specializes in American-made clothing and accessories. Red Wing leather boots, Filson ranch coats, Rogue Territory jeans, Taylor Stitch shirts and TinMan Provisions leather goods are some of the lines the store is selling. The merchandise has a workwear vibe, but feels a little more refined than strictly utilitarian brands like Dickies or Carhartt.
"This is all stuff that I wear and believe in," says Cox, 26. Supporting American companies is one way of rebuilding the economy and creating jobs, he maintains. He's also a stickler for quality and wants the store to be branded as a "purveyor of goods that last."
When he buys a jacket, he says, "I want it to last 40 years."
Cox said he learned retail lessons at Ted's Shoe & Sport in Keene, N.H. , where he grew up. The activewear retailer instilled in him a passion for customer service.
After getting a degree in marketing and advertising at Johnson & Wales in Denver, Cox worked in the restaurant business locally as a waiter and manager, but kept thinking about retail. He wanted to open a store a couple of years ago but couldn't find the right spot.
After talking this fall with his friends who own the bike stores, he decided to carve a retail space out of the 168 square feet they didn't need.
"I love this neighborhood," Cox says of Berkeley. "It's a great combination of old-school businesses and new ones. I live here and work here." In addition to running the store, he works nights nearby at Hops & Pie.
While tiny, the space is carefully merchandised with clothing and accessories and such artwork as snowy scenes of Cox's native New Hampshire. The center table was made by his father, who has an architectural woodworking company, and you can't help notice the very male choice of display pieces: rusted vintage chainsaws.
He didn't use them to cut the wood that's neatly stacked in one corner of the shop, but likes the effect just the same. "It's the real deal," he says.

Colorado school-based health centers receive $1 million in grants
Three Colorado school-based health centers received more than $1 million in competitive grant funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday.
Sen. Mark Udall congratulated the Durango School District 9-R, Denver Health Medical Center and Commerce City Community Health Services for receiving the funds.
The grants are issued under the School-Based Health Center Capital Program, and are designed to help schools and other entities improve and expand its school-based health centers.
Denver Health Medical Center received $500,000, Durango School District 9-R received $485,265 and the Commerce City Community Health Services received $36,985.
"These competitive grants will help improve school-based clinics in Denver, Durango and Commerce City, giving students more access to preventive and primary health care services," Udall said in a statement. "Keeping our children healthy from day one is an important way to ensure students are productive in the classroom and that we catch health problems early when they are most affordable and easiest to treat."
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius awarded more than $80 million to 197 school-based health center programs across the country, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' website. The funding is expected to help health centers serve an additional 384,000 students and continue the expansion of preventive and primary health care services.
School-based health centers are designed to help children with acute or chronic illnesses attend school and improve screenings and disease prevention activities. They typically combine primary care, mental health care, substance abuse counseling, dental health and other treatments.

Owner of Colorado Springs pawn shop arrested in string of burglaries
Authorities arrested the co-owner of a Colorado Springs pawn shop who they believe is connected to multiple burglaries in El Paso County.
On Wednesday, El Paso County Sheriff deputies were called to the 700 block of Wildridge Road in Black Forest, on a report of an attempted burglary, according to a news release from the sheriff's department.
After arriving, a woman told deputies that the side door to her garage had been kicked in. Soon after, the woman saw a man run away. The woman gave deputies a description of a car she believed the suspect drove away in.
Before authorities completed investigating the first attempted burglary, they received a report about a separate burglary in the 7900 block of Forest Heights Circle. Several items were stolen from the home, including collector's coins and jewelry.
Soon after, deputies spotted a vehicle that matched the first victim's description traveling near Black Forest. They stopped the vehicle and quickly recognized that items inside the vehicle matched the list of items stolen from the second victim's home.
The driver was identified as 43-year-old Kevin Lee Mosher, co-owner of the Fast Cash Pawn and Loan in Colorado Springs.
While speaking with Mosher, deputies were told about a third burglary in the 15000 block of Milhaven Place. Evidence found at that location was later linked to Mosher. A fourth burglary in Black Forest was also attributed to Mosher.
Authorities later learned that Mosher may also be connected to additional burglaries in Douglas County. Stolen items were recovered from Mosher's pawn shop in Colorado springs.
Mosher was taken into custody and booked into the Criminal Justice Center on suspicion of second-degree burglary and theft.

Rural marketing: Say no to price wars, relationships key
While brands do have some relevance, in-store recommendation by store owners can override a lot, so a good retailer can sell an unbranded product with ease.
Retailers, in general, are seen as subject matter experts by a lot of consumers unlike in urban cities, where a store assistant is a mere facilitator of a transaction. So, the first thing you’d need to do is talk about your brand to this segment: store owners, traders or merchandisers, those who will be an active partner for the product or service you are selling. Get them to understand the underlying values.
Build relations and partnerships
A lot of trade happens on credit and personal relationships and sales without providing a bill is almost a norm in these markets.
The bond between retailers and consumers in tier III and IV towns tends to be quite strong and often extends into the personal sphere.
So if you are setting up your own stores, you’ll have to work around processes that adapt to such nuances. Big and fancy stores used to intimidate consumers (as they tend to give the perception of being more expensive), but this is slowly changing. Similarly, if you are looking to partner with existing retailers and sell through their shelf space, then these are the systems that you would be experiencing.
So plan your inventory and supply-chain management accordingly. Needless to say, this depends on the vertical you are in.
Standalone stores work well for consumer durables; however, for apparels, personal care items and the like, selling through existing stores in shopping complexes are viable options too.
Franchise your way in
Franchising is a feasible option too, to create a network and reach consumers. Franchisees would be well-versed with buying patterns of consumers in these markets and for a retailer, this would be highly useful to know your consumer profile of that particular town. You will need to do lots of groundwork on where the customer is and how to reach them. However, remember, franchisees may not have empirical data but more anecdotal, and therefore you’ll need to conduct a well-mapped survey to understand the market and gaps therein.
Say no to price wars
As a first generation entrepreneur, without the weightage or backing of big names, it is advisable not to get into price wars.
Existing retailers have strong associations and can drive you out of the market. The key to beat an established retailer with sound reputation and influence in these markets is to do something innovative.
In tier III and IV towns, this is not a difficult deal to crack. Lure customers with nicely dressed promoters, a clean, neat shop with air-conditioning, and ample parking place.
Plus, they look for value for money and functionality of the product rather than the luxury or lifestyle element, so play on the former.
Contrary to what people think, real estate capital costs are high, so opt for rentals if you are setting up base.
Marketing mantras
You will need to do a bit of marketing to complement the above-mentioned initiatives. However, your modus operandi will have to be old-fashioned in some sense and social media is not the way to create awareness.
The plus side is cost of advertising will be less in comparison to urban markets.Hoardings and newspaper inserts work best, say experts. In addition, advertising through cable television and slides in cinemas are good options too as are fairs, small events and exhibitions to create some noise.
Customer relations are equally important here. Never ill-treat them as customers in these towns take things personally. If not treated well once, he/she would never re-visit stores or buy your product/ service, no matter what value you offer.
Brand ambassadors sell products and services well too. If you don’t have the big budget that is needed to bring in a Hindi film industry celebrity, you can also opt for television anchors to come and inaugurate the store or attend the product launch.
They will always draw in the crowds and ensure a better visibility for your brand.

Vodafone fires first salvo against spectrum refarming
Even for the 2.5 mhz of 900 mhz band which these telcos will be allowed to retain, they will have to shell out two times the 1800 mhz reserve price in all circles.
For Vodafone, licences in all the three circles of Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata come up for renewal beginning November next year. While asking for the licence extension, Vodafone has opposed any move towards refarming, though not in as many words.
The three identical letters it has written requesting for licence extension in each circle mention that “extension of license period is a continuation of the already set up network, including continuation of existing spectrum, which is intrinsic to our licence and is being used for providing service to consumers under the licence”.
According to sources, Vodafone already has 8 mhz of 900 mhz band spectrum in Delhi and Mumbai and 7.8 mhz in Kolkata. In the 1800 mhz band, it holds only 2 mhz in each of these three circles.
Obviously, if it is forced to return all 900 mhz spectrum and then participate in auctions at multiple times the price, business will suffer.
Not just Vodafone, Bharti and Idea have also in the past protested strongly against the government’s decision to refarm spectrum.
Speaking on the refarming issue earlier, GSM industry body COAI had pointed out that servicing 450-500 million subscribers in the existing 900 Mhz band with the same quality of service with a limited 2.5 Mhz of spectrum in the 900 Mhz band and the remaining on 1,800 Mhz band would become next to impossible and disruption of wide-scale services should be expected.
COAI had also pointed out that an operator with 2.5 Mhz in the 900 Mhz band and the remaining spectrum in 1,800 Mhz band is worse off than an operator with its complete network in the 1,800 Mhz band as this network will give a false delusion of coverage.
The difference in spectrum propagation/network design in the two bands will lead to coverage constraints.
An industry expert pointed out that licence and spectrum have been delinked but only for future licence agreements. He also said the united access service licence in its present form has no specific reference to the government’s obligation to give specific spectrum in a specific band and at a specific price. The government has full flexibility to change band as well as price.

TCS to scale up presence in China, Latin America, Europe
On business coming from Europe, he said it is expected to grow faster as customers are beginning to spend more. “The budgets are looking good; we are winning lots of transformation deals in Europe,” he said.
In 2011-12, revenue from North America constituted 53.31 per cent of company’s total revenues, while UK and Europe accounted for 25.32 per cent, followed by India (8.60 per cent), Asia Pacific (7.56 per cent), Middle East and Africa (2.13 per cent) and Latin America (3.08 per cent).
On banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) vertical, which contributed 43.08 per cent to the revenues in 2011-12, Chandrasekaran said the vertical is “beginning to pick up momentum”.
“We were particularly happy with the BFSI sectors in the second quarter. Not only have we delivered 4.6 per cent growth in rupee terms in the segment sequentially, but we have also closed four deals, including one from insurance,” he said.
Chandrasekaran added that TCS is seeing a “lot of opportunities” in retail, consumer products and pharmaceutical segments as well.
Telecom, media and entertainment accounted for 12.69 percent of the company’s Rs 48,893.83 crore revenue in 2011-12, while retail and consumer packaged goods contributed 12.18 per cent and manufacturing 7.77 percent of sales.
Chandrasekaran said evolution and fast adoption of technologies like cloud, analytics, big data and mobility also hold a lot of promise.
“Every industry process framework is being redefined and re-imagined by the impact of these technologies. Their use is not limited to just the enterprise; they are impacting our personal and social lives,” he said.
This trend is throwing up huge opportunities as companies want to optimise investments in current technology, drive growth by using digital technologies and platforms, comply with new regulations, and control new risks more effectively, he added.
Shares of the company today closed at Rs 1,248.40 apiece, up 1.27 per cent from its previous close on the BSE.
