Ex-Anadarko chairman Hackett joins investment firm as partner

Former Anadarko chairman James Hackett. (Gary Fountain/For the Houston Chronicle)

It’s been a busy few weeks for James Hackett since he retired as executive chairman of Anadarko Petroleum Corp.

A private investment firm that focuses on energy, Riverstone Holdings LLC, said Thursday that Hackett has joined the firm as a partner and will help lead its Houston office.

Just last week, Hackett was named chairman of the Baylor College of Medicine board of trustees. He succeeds Marc Shapiro as Baylor chairman. Shapiro will remain on the board and lead the development committee. Hackett has been a member of the board of trustees since 2004.

That announcement came around the same time he officially left Anadarko, which is based in The Woodlands.

Hackett has also said that he plans to attend Harvard Divinity School in the fall to learn to write, speak and teach about faith and leadership. Hackett said earlier this year that he was leaving the energy company he had headed for a decade in order to attend the school.

It’s unclear how he will juggle his school plans and his new duties, though Hackett said in a statement that the firm’s founders agreed to accommodate his Harvard studies. A Riverstone spokesman said Hackett was not available for interviews.

At Riverstone, Hackett will co-head the firm’s Houston office.  Officials say he will work closely with the firm’s existing team and portfolio companies to help the firm generate new investment opportunities.

Riverstone was founded in 2000 with roughly $24 billion of equity capital. The firm handles buyout and growth capital investments in energy-related fields, including exploration and production, oilfield services, power and renewables.
