savings to build an online community of people who believe in principles like those behind Burning Man.
The community is going to be a daily blog and a forum. The blog will be similar to dezeen.com -
plenty of pictures to look at combined with extensive editorial analysis, and will focus on cult
artists as well as intriguing, down to earth philosophical topics. There will also be an interview
series with people who have been active in putting major festivals like Burning Man together and other highly
motivated idealists.
The forum will be filled with subforums on topics of interest to the kind of people who attend art and music festivals. Maybe subforums about popular bands, artists, etc.
Possibly we could get forums going for all the main festivals!
The important thing to understand here is that this is not about THE Burning Man event, it is
about the IDEAS Burning Man represents, which are common to many festivals. Our goal is to build a much larger community than
Burning Man has, (Burning Man is mostly attended by West Coasters and there are still tons of
people who are not familiar with it.) Our goal is to build the largest newsletter the world has ever
seen about the principles that we hold dear: radical inclusion, love for one's fellow man, and the
evolution of consciousness, among others. Burning Man currently has 100,000 people on its
mailing list. We are hoping to double or triple that number for our own newsletter in the next 10
months.
This position is full-time during business hours. You can do it from home. It pays $600 per week
for the next 10 months, on an independent contractor basis. The job will involve the following,
among other things:
1. Write 5 blog posts and do 2 email interviews per week for the community's blog. These need to
be really creative, original, well-researched 1000+ word articles with a strong editorial voice and a
lot of analysis. It would be great if you have an interest in the art scene and can easily write about
popular independent artists with large followings. We believe that if the posts are well-received in
these artist's own communities, their followings will participate in our community.
2. Manage the forum. This involves sparking conversation and keeping the conversations going,
especially at the beginning. You would add subtopics as necessary, and innovate on how to
make the forum a place people want to be.
You would also moderate the comments as the festival crowd can be highly outspoken people and there is
a line between making yourself heard and intimidating someone else.
3. Maintaining the community's culture. Through selection of blog and forum topics, and
leadership over the volunteers, you will be shaping and forming the community's culture. It is
helpful if you have held
a leadership role in the past in which you helped define the culture of a successful social good
community.
4. Recruit and manage volunteers. Getting the word out and building the community is the single
most important thing that we need to accomplish. One person working alone will not be able to
do everything. It will be extremely helpful for you to organize and help motivate volunteers who
believe in these principles as well and will help to bring this community to life.
5. Publicize the event yourself. We need you to be the most outspoken member of the
community, telling people about it and getting us to our goal of creating a community that is
known the world over.
The most important skills you need are being able to quickly research and write about interesting
topics, lead people, and be highly organized. If you are a meticulous, organized, type-A sort
of person, I think this will be the position of a lifetime because of how much you will be able to
accomplish.
Note that this is not a 9 to 5 position. This is an opportunity to do something great for the world.
During this 10 month commitment, this needs to be your only job. We need you to go as far
above and beyond as you possibly can to make this happen. This is a rare opportunity to get paid
to do something which really, truly matters.
If you are interested in doing this, please send a resume along with a custom cover letter about why you feel you
are qualified. Most importantly, do you think you can make our goal happen of at least 100,000+
community members in the next 10 months?
How do you think you could make it happen? Have you ever built, managed or led a community
in the past, online or offline? What writing experience do you have? Do you have any samples?
What connection do you have to any festival's community? Have you ever recruited volunteers for a new cause? Are you familiar with any blogging or forum
software? In a nutshell, tell us why you think you are capable of doing this! =)
