Comco Inc. in Burbank CA is looking to immediately fill an opening for a software engineer. This engineer will work closely with senior engineering staff to develop software used to run automated machines. The ideal software engineer candidate will have experience writing software that causes machines to move and interact with the physical world. Even better would be a candidate that also has experience with embedded firmware and circuit boards.

Automation Engineer

DEPARTMENT: Engineering
REPORTS TO: Chief Engineer

SUMMARY: Writes and debugs software and firmware for a variety of robotic, automated, and semi-automated machines, ensuring trouble-free and customer-oriented operation. Works on occasional PC board layout, troubleshooting, and repair, as well as other electrical/software oriented engineering projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Software Development
? Develops new product software as well as custom software solutions for existing machines.
? Keeps Comco software & firmware up to date and bug free.
? Addresses shortcomings in software & firmware as limitations are discovered

Other Engineering Work
? New PCB layout
? Existing board problem fixes
? Other software and electrical projects

EQUIPMENT USED:
Automated machinery, abrasive blasting equipment, O scopes, DMMs, firmware development testbeds, chip programmers, soldering tools, common hand tools, computer equipment. Core development tools are MS Visual Studio (C, C++, C#), microcontroller testbeds (MikroE for Microchip PIC), Eagle EE.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
BS in electrical engineering or software engineering. Excellent working knowledge of C, C++, and/or C#.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Excellent English communication skills, both written and oral. Ability to explain technical issues in a manner that a non-technical person can understand. Ability to write reports, technical procedures, and product manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Must have advanced understanding of and the ability to regularly use algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Understanding of statistics and calculus may be occasionally required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear. The employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel objects, to use tools, operate controls, and to reach and lift. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally roll up to 500 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and depth perception.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Most work is done in a quiet office environment at a computer or desk. Troubleshooting and repair may involve soldering irons and hand tools, both of which can be hazardous. Work on machines in the lab or may expose the employee to moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, fumes, chemicals, airborne particles, and moderate noise levels.
