Why Apple Mac production is moving from China to us

"This does not mean that Apple will do it themselves, but we work with people and we will invest our money," said Cook Bloomberg.

That suggests the company could help one of its partners Taiwanese production, running from factories in China, setting up production lines in the US dedicated to Apple products. McMoRan production testing subsalt Davy Jones No. 1 well in Gulf of Mexico

McMoRan Exploration’s Davy Jones No. 1 production test is in progress on South Marsh Island Block 230, the company announced this week. McMoRan replaced heavy drilling mud in the hole with clear completion fluid, which was required to suppress flow in the well while the final steps were completed. On 11 November, the well was opened for test and flowed gas into an unmetered atmospheric tank before being flared. McMoRan has recovered completion fluids with weights of approximately 9 and 19 lbs/gallon and is initiating operations to inject a barite solvent into the formation to clean out the perforations to achieve a measurable flow test.

McMoRan has drilled two successful subsalt wells in the Davy Jones field. The Davy Jones No. 1 well logged 200 ft of pay in multiple Wilcox sands, which were all full to base. The Davy Jones offset appraisal well (Davy Jones No. 2), which is located 2.5 miles southwest of Davy Jones No. 1, confirmed 120 ft of pay in multiple Wilcox sands, indicating continuity across the major structural features of the Davy Jones prospect and also encountered 192 ft of potential hydrocarbons in the Tuscaloosa and Lower Cretaceous carbonate sections.

McMoRan also has encountered hydrocarbon-bearing porous sands above 24,000 ft, as identified by wireline logs, in the Lineham Creek exploratory well, located onshore in Cameron Parish, La. The well, which has been drilled to 25,250 ft, will be deepened to a proposed 29,000-ft TD to evaluate Eocene and Paleocene objectives.

The Blackbeard West No. 2 ultra-deep exploration well on Ship Shoal Block 188 is currently drilling below 25,200 ft. Recent logging data indicates that the well has encountered additional potential hydrocarbon-bearing sands at approximately 25,000 ft. These sands are in addition to the previously reported potential low-resistivity pay zones, including one that is approximately 80-ft thick and requires further evaluation. The well is currently being deepened toward a proposed 25,500-ft TD to evaluate deeper Miocene targets.

The Lomond North ultra-deep prospect, which is located in the Highlander area in St. Martin Parish, La., is currently drilling below 10,700 ft. This exploratory well has a proposed TD of 30,000 ft and is targeting Eocene, Paleocene and Cretaceous objectives below the salt weld.

McMoRan is the operator with 63.4% working interest in Davy Jones; other partners are Energy XXI, JX Nippon Oil Exploration and Moncrief Offshore.

Innovation: Making Energy Production Cleaner, More Efficient

When we wrote last week about technologies to mitigate water demands during hydraulic fracturing, we knew we’d find more examples of energy innovation for the simple fact that there’s a lot of innovating going on. Here’s a little bit about two other advances in the area of fracking waste water, as well as another company’s initiative to make the development of Canada’s oil sands cleaner and greener.

Halliburton says it has a suite of solutions to reduce the demand for fresh water in hydraulic fracturing operations, called H2-Forward. You can read more about it, here. Basically, it’s a process that allows drillers to reuse fracturing fluid. Halliburton:

"The service includes new technologies such as CleanWave service that is used to process fracturing flowback and produced water, resulting in a clean brine fully suitable for well site operations including drilling, fracturing and completion fluids. … The system, which can treat 20 bbl/minute, uses an electrical process that destabilizes and coagulates suspended colloidal matter in water. Easy scalability enables quickly treating large volumes of water in reserve and flowback pits and, depending on the operation, treating flowback and produced water in real-time during a fracturing operation. The CleanWave system removes up to 99% of total suspended solids, heavy metals, hydrocarbon and bacteria."

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania-based Epiphany Solar Water Systems’ main product is a system that uses solar power to clean fracking waste water. Consol Energy, which is active in the Marcellus Shale area, recently announced it is investing $500,000 in Epiphany and will run a test site for the purification system beginning next month.

Here’s Ephiphany’s description of its technology:

"Dirty water passes into the distillation unit and instantly vaporizes due to the intense heat focused on the distillation unit. During the vaporization process, any dissolved solids … separate, and living organisms (bacteria) are killed due the intense heat. The water vapor (now void or any impurities) continues to pass through the distillation unit. As the steam reaches colder stages it begins to condense back down into distilled water. From the output of the distillation unit then comes freshly distillated water, safe for consumption."

Calgary-based N-Solv Corporation is promoting a technology it says will reduce the amount of energy needed to produce bitumen from oil sands, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions 85 percent without using any water. A $60 million field test in Alberta is scheduled for next April. It uses warm solvents such as propane or butane to melt the bitumen deposits, which the company says is more efficient than using in-situ steam technology. Crude Production Rise: Credit Where Credit’s Due

Last week the Energy Information Administration (EIA) told us that U.S. crude oil production in the first quarter of the year topped 6 million barrels per day (bbl/d) for the first time in 14 years. EIA’s chart:

“Strong growth in U.S. crude oil production since the fourth quarter of 2011 is due mainly to higher output from North Dakota, Texas, and federal leases in the Gulf of Mexico. … After remaining steady between 5.5 million and 5.6 million bbl/d during each of the first three quarters of 2011, EIA estimates that U.S. average quarterly oil production grew to over 5.9 million bbl/d during the fourth quarter and then surpassed 6 million bbl/d during the first quarter of 2012.”

Certainly, great news like that will restart discussion of who deserves credit for such a production milestone – beyond, of course, the energy companies that are actually pulling the oil from the ground or the seafloor. Politico Pro [subscription required] reports White House spokesman Clark Stevens emailed in the administration’s claim for credit:

“Despite misleading rhetoric by some in Washington, President Obama has made expanding responsible oil and gas production here at home a clear priority and the facts speak for themselves. Since the president took office, domestic oil and gas production has increased each year, with oil production in the first quarter of 2012 higher than any time in 14 years and natural gas production at its highest level ever, and that is certainly thanks in part to steps taken by this administration.”

That’s one view. Others disagree. Politico quotes Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service:

“In the end, the president and Congress can’t take credit for what price and technology have delivered. It would be akin to taking credit for the iPad. … Unless there is a price collapse, or a true scientific indictment of fracking, one can expect to see plentiful growth in light sweet crude coming from the Rockies, North Dakota, and even Ohio or West Virginia.”

And Richard Newell, the EIA’s head from 2009-2011:

“In a political year, different parties would like to take credit for positive news in the energy sector and I think here the credit largely goes to technology."

And also Amy Myers Jaffe, an energy fellow at Rice University, who notes that North Dakota and Texas shale production has occurred mainly on private land, while increases from the Gulf result from the actions of previous administrations:

“Production rises from Gulf of Mexico would have been in the hopper way before President Obama took office.”

Settling the argument isn’t as important as recognizing that with the right policies the oil and natural gas industry can further develop America’s energy wealth. With the right strategies and leadership, the United States could see 100 percent of its liquid fuel needs met from North American sources. And along with it: jobs and tax revenues for government.

Strategies, policies and action: It’s what separates election-year rhetoric from substantive progress toward a more secure energy future.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a leading oil and gas operator, as Offshore Production Supervisor you will monitor and control all hydrocarbon production and utility systems ensuring that production targets are achieved.

Duties and Responsibilities:-
Ensure that all production operations are executed in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with the Safety Management System and in compliance with the production target set
Co-ordinate activities relating to Hydrocarbon processing, water injection and utility systems in accordance with SMS and associated procedures
Liaison / communication with onshore Production Engineer on production issues and with onshore operations engineers on production and water injection process issues
As Permit to Work Controller, ensure the effective administration of the Permit to Work System
Troubleshooting as required and recovering from production outages as they occur (providing 24 hour call out assistance as required)

Technologist Production / Drilling Operations

Objectives of the job

Implement technologies to expand Client’s expertise in drilling and production operations. This is in line with the company's long term technology strategy. Our target is to improve technology skills, thereby strengthening our competitive position as preferred E&P partner for world wide E&P activities.

The incumbent will take an active role in pushing optimized technologies into the organization. This will require intense cooperation with Clients subsidiary ( a chemical manufacturer and Clients operating and new business units, and service industry.

Main duties and responsibilities

Prepare, promote and support deployment of new, optimized technologies in the area of production operations, fraccing, work over/drilling activities, and other comparable production and drilling technologies, in particular related to EOR.Prepare proper cost, time and resource planning for proposed activities.Execute new technology projects in project manager function.Liaise effectively with functional departments, R&D department and operating units to ensure appropriate staffing and activity levels.Provide advice to New Business Unit in the evaluation and possible acquisition of assets with potential for optimized technology development.Assist in communication of progress made with technology deployment to management and company staff.Adhere to company policies and procedures, in particular where HSE and project approval processes are concerned.Administration/support to corporate Technology Plan

Education

Internationally recognized university education in Engineering

Key skills

Expert in one or more and competent in the following skill areas:Project Management (time/resource planning, decision-based work planning, etc.)Production and drilling OperationsAdequate Reservoir Management (production/recovery optimization, field development, etc.)Asset Management (interdisciplinary business approach, petroleum contracts, etc.)Production Engineering (separation technology, production measurement, etc.)

Knowledge Requirements

Offshore Production Supervisor

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a leading oil and gas operator, as Offshore Production Supervisor you will monitor and control all hydrocarbon production and utility systems ensuring that production targets are achieved.

Duties and Responsibilities:-
Ensure that all production operations are executed in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with the Safety Management System and in compliance with the production target set
Co-ordinate activities relating to Hydrocarbon processing, water injection and utility systems in accordance with SMS and associated procedures
Liaison / communication with onshore Production Engineer on production issues and with onshore operations engineers on production and water injection process issues
As Permit to Work Controller, ensure the effective administration of the Permit to Work System
Troubleshooting as required and recovering from production outages as they occur (providing 24 hour call out assistance as required)
Closely monitor results of analysis ensuring optimal chemical usage and compliance with environmental policy
Direct and control platform operations on start-up, or in the event of process upset, to minimise the loss of production
Facilitate the execution of all platform maintenance work by maintaining close contact with Discipline Supervisors
Ensure that all plant, processes and equipment are functioning efficiently, with any failure of safety critical elements to meet performance standards being reported immediately to the OIM.
Consult with the OIM and advise him on a regular basis on all matters concerning plant, process, equipment and personnel
Consult with onshore Operations Engineer on any operational concerns
Provide full logs and reports on handover and information on a shift by shift back to back basis to ensure the best flow of information and experience

The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of offshore production and utility systems and appropriate project management experience. You will be ideally be degree qualified (or equivalent) in a related engineering discipline, and must be able to demonstrate relevant operational experience in a similar role.

This is a high profile position within the Production Department of a leading Oil and Gas operator in Aberdeen. In the role of Senior Production Engineer you will be responsible for production and injection surveillance, optimisation and forecasting - the role is key to optimising production, increasing well potential and improving uptime.

Duties & Responsibilities to include:-
To provide daily monitoring, evaluation, analysis of production/ injection performance against potential performance, maximize and optimize volumes.
To undertake daily production engineering & support to offshore production operations/ drilling/ subsea and well services - "from well sand face to point of delivery"; ensure that any financial, change request and cost commitment projections for any production engineering activity, has a clear workscope, cost and schedule prepared and approved before work commences
To generate weekly / monthly production forecast & injection targets and well test priorities
To provide short-term well production solutions that maximise well production within life of field, and cost and volume production/ support strategies
To be part of a small team and ideally "the first among equals" to identify, develop, plan and manage well operation; well testing; well intervention; subsea; plant operation or plant modification targets and priorities to maximize production and/or injection.
Complete post intervention assessment, to ensure continual improvement
Provide specialist technical expertise (and documented justification) for ensuring the safest and most cost effective methods of well/ subsea production, while minimising any loss of production revenue through evaluation of new technology and use of innovative techniques, computer simulation modelling, specific well/ production engineering procedures and equipment
Identify, investigate, audit and control technical change (within limit of discipline knowledge)
Develop and establish relevant, regular interface meetings between Exploitation (reservoir); Drilling; Well Services; Operations; (chemistry, volume eng, cost eng); Commercial and Finance sections of the organisation, ensuring all relevant managers are regularly appraised of Production Engineering issues.
Ensure robust cost control over all production engineering and allocated well engineering activities including interventions, repairs and change outs.

The ideal candidate will be degree qualified (or equivalent) in a related engineering discipline, with experience of working in a similar position in the past. Engineering experience in some or all of the following would be preferable:
Well inflow, outflow, vertical lift performance, flow assurance, gas lift, ESPs, stimulation, well intervention, and operations
Use and preparation of production design models and tools (e.g. simulation/ petroleum eng computer packages - Prosper, GAP, Pipesim, Hysis, Pro-11 etc, generic reservoir/ petroleum eng models, network well models, stimulation models, completion design)
Well functional design, well intervention, maintenance, performance evaluation, well testing, debottlenecking and plant performance
