Activists oppose Keystone XL Pipeline through Oklahoma

The Keystone XL transcontinental oil pipeline is being built to efficiently transport oil from Canada to Texas, and it will run right through Oklahoma.

Native Oklahoman activist Stefan Warner is not happy that the pipeline will be traveling through his home state. He has been jailed multiple times for protesting pipeline operations, and he shows no signs of backing down anytime soon.

While the transport of oil into Oklahoma isn’t new, the completion of this pipeline will streamline operations and cause an increase of oil brought in from Alberta’s sands into the area.

Construction on the pipeline has been ongoing, but a permit to complete the southern leg was recently denied. Warner is hoping to help ensure that the pipeline doesn’t cross Oklahoma, and he isn’t the only one willing to put his name on the line to prevent the completion of the Keystone XL pipeline.

Many others have voiced concerns over the project, including Tom Steyer, a partner at Hellman & Friedman in San Francisco. While Stefan Warner doesn’t have a lot of political clout, Tom Steyer manages 8 billion dollars through his equity firm. He also was a major fundraising support during President Obama’s political campaigns.

TransCanada Corp, who is responsible for the Keystone XL project, disagrees with the concerns raised by activists and environmentalists. They have offered repeated assurance and commitment to making the Keystone XL pipeline one of the safest most reliable oil pipelines in the world. With billions of dollars invested to make the project a success, they have every reason to keep it that way.

The vocal opposition to the project from the likes of Warner and Steyer stems from a misdirected environmental concern. The crude oil and bitumen they are protesting will more than likely be transported through the area whether or not the Keystone XL project is completed. The pipeline that is intended to run through Oklahoma simply makes that transport more efficient.

The Keystone XL pipeline is expected to continue construction by mid summer, barring any political complications. Successful completion of the pipeline will help pump billions of dollars of value into the economy. And Oklahoma stands to benefit as much as anywhere else on the route.

Roughneck strength test

If you are here because you want to get a job on an oil rig then I guess I better explain what a roughneck challenge is. Although not all roughneck challenges are a prank to get a laugh out of a new guy, you should certainly be a little bit suspicions about what your crew is up to if you hear the words “roughneck challenge”.

Rather than explain the purpose of these challenges I might just let you watch the video and I’m sure you will figure it out. I have seen this prank done and also in a couple of other videos too. Although they did get the guy in this video pretty good, they could have taken it a step further and sprayed him with water after because drilling mud is extremely slimy and hard to wash off. I guess he was just luck to have a good crew.

Oil industry demands most grueling work weeks — but offers top pay

If the exhaustion you feel at the end of the work day wasn’t evidence enough, the career experts at PayScale have analyzed the data and delivered the proof: Workers in the oil industry have the most grueling work weeks.

In an analysis of jobs in which most workers receive hourly wages, energy-related professions claimed six of the top 10 longest work weeks. Roustabouts take the top spot, with a median work week of 61 hours. Drillers are not far behind, with a median of 59 hours per week, according to PayScale.

Top dollar: Texas chemical engineers banking $140,000

But the oil industry compensates well for the long hours. Workers in the energy industry also were among the highest paid, with petroleum plant operators earning the highest median wage in the top 10 — $25.48.

PayScale is an online service that surveys workers with various job titles on wages, salaries and other career data.

What roughnecks do when things are slow

If you aren’t familiar with what a roughneck challenge is, check out my post roughneck strength test. This video is an example of harmless fun while things are going pretty slow. It probably looks like we are slacking off on the job but on this particular day we were drilling and when you are drilling things can slow right down.

To give you some idea, a piece of drill pipe is somewhere around 9 metres long and if you hit hard ground there are times where the drilling rate slows to over an hour per metre. So although there are always things you can do around the rig to prepare for the next part of the job, when you are drilling your main job is to be ready for a connection each time you need to add a new bit of pipe to the drill string. Some days you get as little as 15-20 minutes between connections but on this day there was only one connection in a whole 12 hour shift. So this video shows you what we got up to in order to amuse ourselves.

Of course, it’s about 3 am at the time which means the big boss is sound asleep. The idea of this challenge is pretty simple, spin the drill pipe as fast as you can and hold on as long as you can!

Woodside cuts output forecast 9.6% on shutdown, vessel delay

Woodside Petroleum Ltd. (WPL), Australia’s second-largest oil and gas producer, cut its production target by as much as 9.6 percent after a shutdown at its Pluto project and a vessel refurbishment delay. The shares fell.

Output for 2013 will be between 85 million barrels of oil equivalent and 89 million barrels, down as much as 9.6 percent from a previous forecast of 88 million barrels to 94 million barrels, the Perth-based company said today in a statement.

An unplanned shutdown of the liquefied natural gas processing unit at the A$15 billion ($14 billion) Pluto project in Western Australia was caused by a technical issue, the company said without providing additional details, sending its shares down 3.4 percent. Production will resume shortly, Woodside said, without specifying a date.

“To have what is a fairly major interruption this fresh, not even 18 months into full-scale production, is quite disappointing and justifies the market’s reaction,” Evan Lucas, a Melbourne-based market strategist at IG Markets Ltd., said by phone. “It’s disappointing that they are being interrupted by technical complications.”

Woodside fell A$1.20 to A$34.46 at the close in Sydney. Earlier it fell as much as 5.1 percent, the most since Nov. 25, 2011. Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index declined 1.9 percent.

Pluto had met or exceeded production targets since it began operating in April 2012, Laura Lunt, a spokeswoman for the company said by phone from Perth.

Vincent Delay

Delays to the scheduled refurbishment of the Vincent floating production storage and offloading vessel meant output at that facility won’t restart until October, the company said in its statement.

Woodside’s former chairman Geoff Donaldson died last week at the age of 99, the company said in a separate e-mailed statement. Donaldson helped to found Woodside in 1954 and served as chairman for 28 years to 1984, it said.

“Without his personal drive and perseverance Woodside would not have become the company it is today,” Chief Executive Officer Peter Coleman said in the statement.
