Truck Driving Career

Qualifications

Truck drivers are not allowed to work more than 60 hours in a 7 day period and they need to rest for at least 10 hours for every 11 driving hours. Local truck drivers often work in an excess of 50 hours each week. In order to qualify as a truck driver, you would need a resident state-issued Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to drive a 26,000 pounds or above cargo truck. This license is also required for drivers who transport hazardous material of any truck size.

Some groups are exempted from the CDL requirement. These groups are firefighters, farmers, emergency medical technicians, snow and ice removers and some military drivers. For truck drivers of light trucks and vans, they are only required to possess a standard driver’s license.

To obtain a CDL to kick-start a , applicants need to demonstrate their skills and ability to safely drive a commercial-sized vehicle as well as pass a written exam on the rules and regulations on the road. A person needs to be 18 years of age to operate trucks within the state’s boundaries and 21 years old and above to drive trucks outstation.

Apart from that, a would-be truck driver should also be in optimal physical shape. He or she has to undergo a bi-annual physical examination, must have good hearing and a 70 degree field of vision in each eye. Being color blind won't help and drivers must be able to hear a forced whisper from a distance of 5 feet. If an applicant passes all these requirements, than they’ve got one foot at the driving wheel of a truck.

Truck drivers are also not supposed to be physically disabled and have normal use of their limbs. If they need to use medication, these substances should be verified and prescribed by a licensed medical doctor. Most truck operators or delivery companies favor drivers with a good personality and character. This is because truck drivers are in constant contact with their customers and should project a good and approachable attitude as well as be neat in appearance and can work with less supervision and extra initiatives.

A safe truck driver will never have to worry about finding a job, as trucking companies hire recruiters who are constantly focused on finding new drivers. As long as our national economy is functioning, truck drivers will always be high demand.

Many people are confused about how to qualify for truck driving jobs. To become a licensed truck driver, a driver must consider these requirements:

The driver must be at least 21 years old. This is to show that he are matured enough to handle such large vehicles and interact with the police and the public.
He must also be in good physical condition. It is expected of a driver to have good hearing, a 70-degree field of vision in each eye, and at least 20/40 vision with corrective lenses or glasses. A truck driver also cannot be colorblind.
A prospective driver must also pass the CDL exam which consists of a written test on the rules and regulations and a demonstration that the driver can safely operate a commercial truck.
A driver must also have a good driving record to qualify. A excessive amount of traffic violations will prevent a company from taking a risk in hiring a driver.
He must also not have a history of conviction of felony related to the use of a motor vehicle. This generally includes crime related to possession of drugs or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The driver must also not have been involved in a hit-and-run accident which led to death or injury.
A driver must also be able to speak and read English. This skill is imperative to prepare reports, read road signs, and communicate with the public and the police.
Due to the nature of the job, a driver must be able to lift heavy objects. Though the duty of a truck driver does not directly involve lifting heavy objects, there are often times cases where the driver might be involved in such activities. This could especially become important when he finds himself under unexpected circumstances on the highway.

The most effective method of passing the CDL exam is to attend a reputable driving school. These driving schools are scattered all throughout the country and can be either government run or privately run. One good thing about truck driving schools is that a driver will be taught the necessary things that are generally learned only through personal experience on the road. In some cases, a trucking company may even sponsor a driver to get him through driving school, but this usually requires that the driver work for the company for a set number of months. This could be a great opportunity for new drivers as it is extraordinarily difficult to get a truck driving job without an available work history.

Marketplace radio passed along to listeners the oil industry assertion that it was spending $300 million a month on the wages of workers on offshore drilling rigs that have been idled by President Obama's moratorium on new deep water drilling. The Washington Post reports that the ban has idled 33 deep-water drilling rigs.

If the average worker on a rig earns $100,000 a year, the industry's claim about lost wages would imply that it was employing 36,000 workers, or more than 1,000 on each idled rig. This seems implausibly high, and should cause reporters to question the industry's claim rather than just report it as being true. (The industry has an incentive to exaggerate the impact of the moratorium on workers since it helps to advance its agenda of ending the moratorium.)
