Elsewedy Electric Signs $169m Power Plant Deal

Elsewedy Electric (SWDY), the leading wire cable and integrated energy solution provider in the Middle East and Africa, through one of its subsidiaries, announces the signing of a US$ 169 Million contract in Iraq with the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity to build and operate a new power plant in Diwaniya, with four 125 MW General Electric gas turbines.

The gas-fired 500 megawatt power projects is located 23 km west of Aldiwaniya city and shall be completed within 18-months on an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) basis. The contract does not include the supply of the four GE gas turbines that have already been purchased by the Government of Iraq from General Electric in a mega deal that consisted of 56 gas turbines in 2008.

Elsewedy Electric’s scope of work includes design, procurement and installation of all balance of plant in addition to the erection and testing of the GE gas turbines. In addition, Elsewedy Electric will be responsible for the spare parts and six months of operation and maintenance after the completion of the project.

The Arab Contractors will be responsible for all the civil, construction and site utilities for the project.

Iraq, holder of the world’s fifth-largest oil reserves, is struggling to raise power supplies, which are currently at about 7,500 megawatts, or half of its domestic demand of about 15,000 megawatts.

Elsewedy Electric’s first office in Iraq was opened in 2006 in Erbil.

STX Wins $150m Power Plant Order

South Korea’s STX Heavy Industries has said it has won a $150-million order to construct and operate a power plant in Amara, in Missan province.

Under the turnkey contract signed with Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity, STX will take responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the plant for a year after its completion.

It will be equipped with four 125-megawatt gas turbines, and is to be completed by June 2014.

A 200-MW, diesel-fueled station to the north of Amara was also built by STX and opened in June.

Reuters reports that in July STX won a $195-million contract from a consortium led by Italian energy company ENI to build an oil and gas processing plant in Basra.

Obama leads Forbes power list, Manmohan Singh on 19

When it comes to power, trumps politics business, according to a new Forbes ranking. Reuters

The list of top ranked businessman was Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on number 4. U.s. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and the President of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi, both public officials also came in the top 10.

"List this year reflects the changing of the guard in the world two most powerful countries: the United States and China," Michael Noer, Forbes Executive Editor, told Reuters in an e-mail.

Noer noted that China's President Hu Jintao, third most powerful person last year, fell off the list as he is leaving his successor, Xi Jinping, power, and ninth ranked instead.

U.s. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who have declared that they will not serve on the Obama second term, were not in the rankings this year.

While elected and appointed officials and business people the vast majority of Forbes most powerful, Pope Benedict XVI placed fifth in the standings.

One of the oddities was Joaquin Guzman Loera on nr. 63.

Loera, is far from a household name, a billionaire nicknamed "El Chapo" who as head of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel drug trader is the world's most powerful people, according to Forbes.

Age was not a barrier, with two of the youngest and oldest of this year is the most powerful — 28-year-old Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and 81-year-old News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch — back-to-back at numbers 25 and 26, respectively.

Forbes noted that Zuckerberg fell out last year after top 10 Facebook IPO disappointed. Meanwhile, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was a gainer, those four spots to no. 18 despite the fact that moved only halfway into her first term.

"With the NASA space shuttle fleet, retire the private companies like SpaceX have large contracts awarded to do things such as resupply the International Space Station. The commercialisation of space has just begun, but we expect that big business, "Noer said.

Former President Bill Clinton placed 50th, with editors noting that by hitting the campaign trail for Obama, Clinton "cemented his status as a pivotal figure", along with his nonpartisan Global Initiative attracting more than 71 billion dollars in commitments for the financing of charitable action worldwide.

Other high-ranking government leaders included French President François Hollande on nr. 14, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on nr. Iran's Grand Ayatollah Ali Hoseini-Khamenei 19 and number 21.

Among entrepreneurs in the top 20 were Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett at no. 15, Wal-Mart CEO Michael Duke at no. 17 and Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin on nr. 20.

Syscom 18 Wins Deal for Power Metering Systems

Syscom 18, the Romanian company specialising in industrial automation and measuring systems, has won a contract worth three million euros in Iraq.

The project involves the “design, construction, installation, electrical and automation side and starting operations of 40 fiscal metering systems”, to be integrated into two power plants; project completion is scheduled for the second half of 2013.

Ion Andronache, President of Syscom 18, commented:

“The fast development pace of the oil and gas segment in the region, but also our previous work experience in other countries in the Middle East, helped us win this project.

“Given that the regional markets continued to have a high economic potential, their financial and energy resources remained at important parameters and the Middle East further needs equipment of industrial measurement and control for oil exploitation.

“Six years ago still, we decided to orient a significant part of our business efforts to the external market and we did well. This year, about 25 percent of our revenue structure comes from international projects.“

He continued:

“Iraq is for us a region of great interest. There are currently some serious opportunities for foreign companies wishing to implement projects in the Iraqi energy field. Their national development plans aim to satisfy, through the large projects of providing electricity, population’s increasing energy demands.

“So that power plants will be built, imports of electricity will increase, infrastructure is to be constructed. In other words, large investments into projects are expected, and experienced foreign companies in the field will also have access, those capable to implement short or long-term projects.

“Beyond the construction and operation of the power systems and units, opportunities will arise for the training of Iraqi engineers, managers and other staff in the energy sector.“

Seneca/Ensign rigs switch to LNG for power in Marcellus

Two of GE’s Jenbacher J320 turbocharged natural gas engines are powering the first LNG-fueled drilling rigs in Pennsylvania.

To reduce environmental impact and improve the economic performance of US unconventional gas production activities, Seneca Resources Corp and Ensign Drilling have installed two GE gas engines to power the first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled drilling rigs in the Marcellus Shale. Seneca converted the power plants of two existing diesel-powered rigs to use LNG in GE’s 1-megawatt Jenbacher J320 turbocharged natural gas engines. The Jenbacher units were combined with Ensign Drilling-designed rig packages to provide the electricity needed by each rig. The J320 represents GE’s first US Environmental Protection Agency-certified technology for mobile and stationary drilling applications.

In October, Seneca Resources and Ensign Drilling converted their first rig, which is operating in Lycoming County, Pa. The second rig was converted to LNG in November and was assigned to Seneca’s Marcellus Shale gas leases in Forest, Elk, Jefferson and McKean counties.

Prime Minister Opens Hilla Gas Power Station

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has inaugurated the new Hilla gas-powered electricity station in Babil province.

Ministry of Electricity spokesman Musab Al-Mudarris said that the station’s total power is 250 MW, using two 125-MW GE generators.

The project was carried out by the Al-Hurra International company at a cost of $84 million, under the supervision of the Ministry of Electricity.

The opening ceremony was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs Hussain al-Shahristani and Electricity Minister Karim Aftan

Key Duties in this role will include:

Spinwell Global is working with an International Engineering Business and has been commissioned to recruit a Senior Planning Engineer for a New Power & Desalination Project located 125km away from Jeddah.

The scope of work and responsibilities will include the following:

* Review the implementation time schedules which are periodically issued by the Contractor for each sub-project regarding match with the actual progress and achievement of the planned progress.

* Develop and maintain the Scheduler's own implementation time schedules for the purpose of establishing a systematic and consistent estimate of the percentages of completion for each sub-project. Each sub-project shall be broken down into the disciplines Engineering, Procurement, Construction & Erection and Commissioning.

* Present the progress as planned and achieved by the Contractor in form of tables and S-curves for each sub-project and also for the total project (weighted average).

* Monitor and verify Contractor's work progress in all areas for the purpose of progress payments and assist the Project/Site Manager in issuing the payment certificates with all necessary backup and evidence. The primary progress assessment in the field is however done by the discipline engineers.

* Maintain records for all payments made by the Employer to the Contractor. This comprises separate payments for the commercial value of goods/services and for the related VAT.

* Maintain records for all contract variations whether implicitly or explicitly agreed between Contractor and Employer.

* Transfer of knowledge to the Employer's counterpart engineers

* Receive and implement instructions as given by the Project Manager.

Construction Manager - CCGT Power

Spinwell Global is urgently looking to recruit a Construction Manager for a Power project located 125km west of Riyadh. The project provides for the design, engineering, procurement and construction of a power generation plant and associated facilities. The power generation plant and associated facilities will be implemented under a LSTK EPC contract.

The power plant will comprise of two "Groups"; Group 1 will consist 4 x GE gas turbines in a "4 1 " combined cycle modules; Group 2 consists of 3 x GE gas turbines in a "3 1 " combined cycle module. Air cooled condensers will be provided for the steam turbine cycles.

Group 1 output will be 960 MW net at the Delivery Point, and Group 2 will provide 795.6 MW at the Delivery Point.

Previous experience as Construction Manager on a CCGT power plant is a must preferably some experience in Saudi Arabia. You will be from a Mechanical Discipline.

The scope of work and responsibilities will include the following:

* Act as the Deputy Project Manager and fulfil his duties during his absences.

* Lead the site supervision team including all Senior Site Engineers.

* Plan, direct, coordinate, budget through subordinate supervisory personnel, activities concerned with the construction and maintenance of the Desalination and Power Plant.

* Monitor and inspect all general erection/installation/commissioning activities of the Contractor with regards to progress, compliance with the Contract and applicable codes/standards, quality, safety and environmental acceptance.

* Review and approve Contractor's general erection/installation/commissioning work method statements.

* Review and approve site related general design/ engineering matters submitted by the Contractor.

* Review and approve Contractor's site quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) system proposed for all general erection/installation/commissioning activities.

* Review and approve the proposed general test procedures for materials/equipment/plant to be tested on Site by the Contractor. Witness such tests and review the related test reports.

* Monitor and verify Contractor's work progress in the general areas for the purpose of progress payments and assist the Project/Site Manager in issuing the payment certificates with all necessary backup.

* Attend the regular (daily/weekly) Site coordination meetings with the Contractor and the monthly progress review meeting.

* Prepare the regular Site progress reports for the general part as required by the Project/Site Manager (weekly and monthly).

* Maintain records for the general part of contractual claims and variations by either the Contractor or the Employer including the necessary evidence

* Inspect and enforce preventive safety and health measures to be taken by the Contractor.

* Inspect and enforce preventive environmental protection measures to be taken by the Contractor

* Review the training program proposed by the Contractor for the Employer's personnel.

* Review the general part of the preliminary (prior to start commissioning) and final (prior to taking over) O&M manuals submitted by the Contractor

* Assist PE's commissioning manager in executing his duties during the commissioning phase of the project. Act on his behalf during his absences.

* Ensure strict adherence of the project procedures, technical and administrative, issued by the Head Office and the Project Manager. In case of difficulties in application of such instructions, the Project Manager shall be consulted before any other actions are being taken.

* Receive and implement instructions as given by the Project Manager.

* Cooperate in all activities with the PE Site team in accordance with the instructions of the Project Manager

In return, you will receive a Tax Free Base Salary plus package.
