Iraq Completes $146m Baghdad Water Scheme

Iraq has completed a new $146-million project to supply drinking water to much of Baghdad’s population.

Saleh al-Mutlaq (pictured), deputy prime minister for service affairs, told Al-Shorfa:

“The ministry of municipalities opened the Abu Ghraib Great Water Project … It will provide drinking water to houses through modern networks, and will cover about 50% of capital’s residents … The project is designed to serve the area for 25 years, and will be expanded later in consideration of population growth and urban expansion.“

A similar project, carried out by Iraqi companies assisted by German and Turkish companies, is now under way in al-Rasafa in Baghdad, and is expected to be completed by mid-2013.

New Contract Signed for Free Zone in Baghdad

The General Commission for Iraqi Free Zones (IFZ) has signed a contract to establish a special zone for commercial activities in accordance with the Free Zones law number 3 of 1998, reports to Aswat al-Iraq.

Al-Maliki Opens International Book Fair in Baghdad

His Excellency Prime Minister Nouri Kamil Al-Maliki opened the International Book Fair at Baghdad International Fair on Thursday.

The Prime Minister said in a press conference:

“The Iraqi culture and Iraqi intellectuals are the priorities of our attention today, this is a considerable development compared to the time of the former regime, when books were banned.

“Iraq has returned again to embrace intellectuals and books, and there is an opportunity for printing and publishing, and this is one of the signs and indications of an atmosphere of freedom that we are witnessing in Iraq.

“We must focus on promoting culture so that we can build a civilized state, as the interest in culture is one of the basic steps in the construction efforts.“

His Excellency toured the book fair during which he met with the participants and listened to their views and ideas related to its development.

Iraq and Russia have been getting cosy lately with high ranking visitors and multi-billion dollar arms deals. Is this friendship just a business opportunity? Related to events in Syria or Iran? Or something more sinister?

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s visit to Russia as well as the making, then breaking, of a multi-billion dollar arms deal with Russia has led to plenty of questions. These include questions on the state of the Russian-Iraqi friendship, its importance to both partners and its significance in geo-political terms.

Over the past century, the relationship between Iraq and Russia may best be described as inconsistent. Or possibly as similar to the kind of relationship that a small business might have with a big, multi-national business. It makes no sense for the big business

Baghdad Uni Signs Agreement with Microsoft

The University of Baghdad has signed a joint cooperation agreement with Microsoft, under which the American technology giant will provide supplies for the application of scientific quality and reliability standards at the university.

The deal includes the provision of 1000 copies of Windows 7 for use by university departments, colleges and institutes and centres.

The software has been provided at discounts exceeding 80 percent.
