Basra’s Governor Meets US Businessmen

(pictured), is visiting the U.S. this week for talks with American firms considering investing in Iraq.

At a private luncheon hosted today by the Bilateral US-Arab Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the United States’ Departments of State and Commerce, he addressed more than 100 local executives to outline investment opportunities in the Basra region for American firms:

“Our provincial income has expanded 500% over the past several years. This growth in revenue has exceeded the province’s ability to manage and implement projects, so with this in mind, we are looking for expert consultants and quality companies that can help Basra fulfill and fully utilize our ever-expanding spending power.“

Basra is currently Iraq’s most promising province for foreign entrepreneurs. In addition to federal government allocations, the province has its own budget which it draws from the so-called petro-dollar project.

Under the petro-dollar programme, Iraqi provinces are entitled to $2 for each barrel of oil produced from their oil fields.

Foreign Minister Meets Serbian and Greek Ambassadors

Iraq’s Foreign Minister, Hoshyar Zebari, met the Serbian Ambassador to Iraq, Radisav Petrovic, on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Minister Zebari called on the Serbian investment companies to contribute in Iraq’s reconstruction.

The Undersecretary for Policy Planning and Bilateral Relations, Head of the Europe Department, and the Minister’s Office Manager also attended the meeting.

Minister Zebari also met the Greek Ambassador to Iraq, Mercourios Karafotias, and discussed with him the Greek companies’ contribution in the reconstruction and development process.

Foreign Minister Zebari Meets Ukrainian Delegation

Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari met his Ukrainian counterpart Konstantin Krishenko and his accompanying delegation in recent days.

The two sides held talks on strengthening bilateral relations and ways of developing them, which coincided with the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of relations between Iraq and Ukraine.

They signed a joint statement on the development of relations between the two countries, in addition to the signing of a memorandum of understanding for cooperation between the two countries’ Institutes of Foreign Service, and agreed to exchange visits between the two countries.

In conclusion, the two sides held a press conference where Minister Zebari praised the role of Ukraine in contributing in various fields in building the new Iraq.

The Ukranian Minister met with Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki and the ministers of oil and municipalities and Industry and Chairman of the National Investment Commission.
