Position Overview:

Kidspace Children's Museum, the premier children's museum in Southern California, subscribes to the belief that play is the work of childhood, and that children learn best when directing their own learning experiences. As an integral member of the Education Team, the Science Specialist supports the museum's mission as the resident expert and care taker of all the live collections, as well as provide science content for all educational programming on-site and off-site. The Science Specialist works closely with all Education Specialists.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

? Program development, maintenance, and training for all Galvin Physics Forest curriculums.
? Develop, manage and oversee the museum's Interactive Garden and Harvest Corners exhibits and programs; assist in developing rotating interactive gardens; maintain inventory for exhibit; manage the gardens and Interpretative Arroyo portion of education department budget.
? Train staff and volunteers in essential plant information that enhances guest interaction with the gardens and in essential maintenance procedures that enable the gardens to flourish and thrive.
? Cultivate partnership opportunities with local/regional environmental organizations to maximize resources and enhance our program offerings; coordinate all offsite community events that are outdoor-Ed focused.
? Work with communications and marketing manager to publicize outdoor education programs.
? Assist with administrative duties, as needed, including, school group check-in, etc.
? Actively seek professional development opportunities to increase live collections expertise
? Works directly with Education Managers and Director to write, update, facilitate and provide training for all live collections outreach programming including community events.
? Responsible for all supplies and materials related to live collections outreach programming.
? Development and training of STEM curriculum for schools and school programming
? Develop & implementation of curriculum for camps (summer, spring, and holiday) in collaboration with Education Specialists.
Live Collections:
? Manage and maintain the Museum's Insectary, and all live collections exhibits, including cleaning, stocking, and monitoring health of all animals.
? Establish essential maintenance procedures, policies, protocols and documentation, (i.e. feeding logs) that comply with USDA regulations and enable the live collections to flourish and thrive by conducting insect feedings, animal care and animal handling training.
? Responsible for purchasing of all feeding supplies and maintaining inventory for live collection exhibits, ensuring all signage is accurate and updated.
? Ensures that all staff working with live collections is properly trained and has adequate access to all animals needed.
? Write, update and provide training for all curricula related to live collections.
? Event planner and lead for Bug Fair, Caterpillar Adoption, Butterfly Release and others as needed.

Experience/Qualifications:

? Bachelor's degree is required.
? Working knowledge of USDA regulations regarding the maintenance of live collections
? Experience handling and caring for reptiles, insects, and small mammals
? Extensive knowledge of relevant animal anatomy, eating habits and habitat requirements
? Ability to communicate in the written and spoken word with tact, diplomacy, and/or authority when necessary.
? Be open to learning and adapt to changes as they arise within the museum
? Appreciate hands-on learning, developmentally appropriate practices and imaginative play to support whole family learning.
? Fluency in a language other than English a plus.
? Able to talk, see, stoop, bend, reach stand for long periods of time, have agility to climb up towers and through tunnels and walk in order to perform Educator duties.
? Able to quickly respond to emergency situations.
? Able to spend entire shift mobile between guests and museum stations.
? Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
? Able to work in an enclosed office space with live collections.
? Able to work in an outdoor environment with climate and temperature changes for long periods of time.

The Science Specialist is a non-exempt employee who works a 40-hour week with a flexible schedule, depending on programming needs; weekends and evening work is required. Kidspace offers very competitive benefits and is an equal opportunity employer.
